For support of the Senior Full Stack Engineer who will oversee the expansion of StepReads, a research-backed tool that helps struggling students access appropriate grade-level content and build reading confidence. StepReads are scaffolded versions of ReadWorks articles that help emerging and struggling readers to build background knowledge, learn new vocabulary words, and gain confidence before tackling the original text. StepReads allows educators to teach the same overall topic to an entire class while yet offering necessary supports to those students reading below grade level. ReadWorks plans to use a generative AI solution to expand their current library of approximately 400 StepReads and to increase the usage and number of assignments made by educators across New York City. To increase usage, ReadWorks will strategically market to NYC educators and offer them free professional learnings. ReadWorks seeks to improve teacher effectiveness and raise student achievement in reading comprehension through research-based, classroom-proven instructional practices and curricula, and through widely offering free, open-access online reading-related technology.
